Meril launches HALO Stem, Latitud Revision Cup for Indian hip replacement needs

The dual launch is aimed at creating a primary-to-revision hip replacement ecosystem, with a focus on anatomical reconstruction, stable fixation and consistent implant positioning

Meril Life Sciences has launched the HALO (Hybrid Asian Low Offset) Stem and Latitud Revision Acetabular Cup System, expanding its total hip arthroplasty portfolio with implants designed specifically to address anatomical and surgical considerations observed in Indian and Asian patient populations.

The dual launch is aimed at creating a primary-to-revision hip replacement ecosystem, with a focus on anatomical reconstruction, stable fixation and consistent implant positioning.

The development reflects a shift in India’s orthopaedic implant market, which has traditionally relied heavily on imported implants designed around European and North American anatomical datasets. Meril said Indian and Asian patients can present different anatomical characteristics, including lower femoral offsets, narrower intramedullary canals and smaller pelvic profiles.

To address these requirements, Meril worked with Indian orthopaedic surgeons and used 3D CT-based morphometric studies of local patient populations to inform the implant designs.

The HALO Stem has been developed to support anatomical reconstruction while facilitating fit, alignment and load transfer. Its design includes a 135-degree neck angle, 2.5-degree taper angle, ribbed geometry for rotational stability and fixation, extended ribs to support fixation and removal, and a polished neck and distal tip intended to facilitate insertion. Its blasted surface is designed to support fixation.

Bose, Director and Senior Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, SIMS Hospital, said, “The development of the HALO Stem was driven by the need to address the anatomical and surgical considerations we encounter in our patients. The objective was to create a stem that supports accurate anatomical reconstruction while providing reliable primary stability and controlled insertion.”

“The design features have been developed with the surgeon’s requirements and the patient’s anatomy in mind, with an emphasis on consistency and predictability during total hip arthroplasty,” said Dr. Bose. 

Alongside the primary hip implant, Meril has introduced the Latitud Revision Acetabular Cup System, designed for complex revision procedures involving acetabular bone loss. The system is intended to provide surgeons with greater flexibility when addressing challenging bone defects and varying pelvic anatomies.
