SABIC launches first fluorine-free polycarbonate resin to boost medical device safety

The NP resin portfolio, indicated by its UL746G-certified prefix, equips manufacturers across industries to meet increasingly stringent regulatory and performance standards

SABIC, a global chemical industry leader, has unveiled LNP ELCRES NPCRX9612U, the first in a new family of polycarbonate copolymer resins formulated entirely without fluorine or other per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS).

Certified under UL746G, this new grade delivers outstanding chemical resistance, withstanding harsh healthcare disinfectants, while offering UL94 V0 flame retardance at 1.5mm, making it ideal for thin-wall designs.

The NP resin portfolio, indicated by its UL746G-certified prefix, equips manufacturers across industries to meet increasingly stringent regulatory and performance standards.

“SABIC is investing in the research and development of new materials that can help OEMs get ahead of the curve in compliance and performance,” said Sergi Monros, vice president, SABIC Polymers, Specialties BU. “Our deep understanding of customers’ current and future application needs allows SABIC to be proactive in creating new grades that meet these requirements.”

The new LNP ELCRES NPCRX9612U resin combines excellent impact performance with resistance to degradation from aggressive disinfectants such as quaternary ammonium salts. Biocompatible and custom-colorable, it supports thin-wall, miniaturized device designs, making it suitable for applications including insulin pumps, diagnostic imaging devices, and monitors.

This launch strengthens SABIC’s extensive medical-grade thermoplastics portfolio, which also includes LNP LUBRILOY compounds—using proprietary, non-PTFE internal lubrication technology for wear resistance and low friction without PFAS—and ULTEM HU resins, unreinforced polyetherimides (PEI) known for mechanical, electrical, dimensional stability, and chemical and heat resistance.
