FibroBiologics bags US patent for Fibroblast-based wound healing

The technology targets some of the most difficult wounds to heal

FibroBiologics has secured a new US patent covering the use of fibroblasts and fibroblast-derived materials to accelerate wound healing, strengthening the clinical-stage biotech company's intellectual property position in regenerative medicine.
 
The patent for "Therapeutic Use of Fibroblasts for Use in Wound Healing" covers topical treatments using 3D spheroid fibroblasts and fibroblast-derived materials to treat and accelerate the healing of wounds.
 
The technology targets some of the most difficult wounds to heal, including diabetic foot ulcers, venous leg ulcers, pressure wounds, bedsores and burns, as well as cuts and abrasions.
 
FibroBiologics said preclinical studies described in the patent found that wounds treated with fibroblast spheroids and fibroblast-derived materials healed significantly faster than untreated controls in both diabetic and non-diabetic models.
 
"Wound care is one of the largest unmet needs in medicine, and this patent further solidifies our leadership position in fibroblast-based therapies," said Pete O'Heeron, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of FibroBiologics. 
 
"Our preclinical data showed that wounds treated with fibroblast spheroids healed significantly faster than controls, even in diabetic models where healing is notoriously difficult. We believe this technology has the potential to change the standard of care for millions of patients suffering from chronic and nonhealing wounds."
 
The newly issued claims cover methods that involve topically administering a therapeutically effective composition containing 3D spheroid fibroblasts or fibroblast-derived materials. Those materials can include extracellular vesicles, exosomes, microvesicles, apoptotic bodies and fragments of fibroblast cells.
 
The patent also covers methods for accelerating wound healing through topical administration of fibroblast spheroid compositions.
 
"Spheroids act as living reservoirs that implant on the wound surface, migrate, and proliferate, delivering regenerative signals directly where they are needed. Our studies demonstrated accelerated wound closure and reduced inflammation, which are critical factors in resolving chronic wounds," said Hamid Khoja, Chief Scientific Officer of FibroBiologics.
 
Nonhealing wounds represent a major healthcare challenge, particularly among patients with diabetes and other underlying conditions that can interfere with the body's natural repair process. Chronic wounds can also impose substantial physical, emotional and psychological costs on patients.
 
The new patent adds to FibroBiologics' broader intellectual property portfolio, which the company says includes more than 270 issued and pending patents in the US and internationally. Its programs span wound healing, multiple sclerosis, disc degeneration, psoriasis, orthopedics, human longevity and cancer.
