To help curb the prevention of infectious diseases, Sir H.N. Reliance Foundation Hospital (HN RFH) launched a unique campaign to educate public school children across the city on the importance of hand hygiene. They tied up with schools and engaged 550 students at the onset of this city wide campaign.

Notably, it is estimated that 1.4 million people including nearly 400,000 children under five die each year from preventable diseases attributable to inadequate WASH including diarrhea, acute respiratory infections (ARIs), soil-transmitted helminths, and malnutrition. Hand-related ailments are one of the most common causes of infectious diseases. A simple act of cleaning hands can save lives and reduce illness by helping prevent the spread of diseases.

The participants were informed about the correct method of handwashing and how usual methods of handwashing leave out vital sites on the hands.  They were educated about the 7- step hand-washing technique trainings with the goal of increasing awareness and knowledge of the children regarding hand hygiene. The experts also counseled regarding maintenance of proper hand hygiene and importance of hand-washing.

This activity was conducted on the occasion of Global Handwashing Day; a global advocacy day dedicated to increasing awareness and understanding about the importance of handwashing with soap as an effective and affordable way to prevent diseases and save lives.

This is the start of an array of activities by HN RFH to inform and educate masses about diseases associated with basic hygiene.
