The event showcased latest breakthroughs in minimally invasive surgery, organ-preservation strategies, and targeted therapies
The International Society for Diseases of the Esophagus (ISDE), in partnership with Basavatarakam Indo-American Cancer Hospital & Research Institute (BIACH & RI), has launched the prestigious ISDE India Edition 2026 in Hyderabad.
The event showcasied latest breakthroughs in minimally invasive surgery, organ-preservation strategies, multimodal care, and targeted therapies.
Hosted in India for the first time, the two-day global conference at The Westin Hyderabad, Madhapur, brought together more than 150 oncologists and upper GI cancer experts from India, Canada, Japan, Singapore, Australia, and the United States, reinforcing India’s rising stature in esophageal cancer research and clinical excellence.
The event also coincides with the silver jubilee celebrations of BIACH & RI, underscoring the institution’s 25-year contribution to cancer care. Adding to the milestone announcements, the hospital revealed plans to establish a 500-bed Basavatarakam Cancer Hospital in Amaravati, Andhra Pradesh, by June 22, 2028, significantly expanding access to advanced oncology services in the region.
A major research initiative is also set to be unveiled, with Tata Memorial Hospital launching an Esophageal Cancer Study Group within the National Cancer Grid tomorrow, aimed at driving large-scale, India-specific research to improve outcomes for one of the country’s most aggressive and underdiagnosed cancers.
Experts at the conference highlighted that tobacco use, alcohol consumption, very hot beverages, and long-term intake of smoked or preserved meats remain key contributors to the higher incidence of esophageal cancer in hotspots such as Kashmir and the North-East, where disease rates are reported to be six to seven times the national average.
