Medtronic launches first 'intelligent' circular stapler to boost surgical precision, reduce leaks

The Signia Circular Stapler is the only circular stapler on the market with integrated leak testing and features designed to minimize risk

Medtronicc, a global leader in healthcare technology, announced the limited launch of the Signia Circular Stapler with Tri-Staple technology, marking the first intelligent circular stapling system for use throughout the alimentary tract. The stapler is designed for end-to-end, end-to-side, and side-to-side anastomoses in both open and laparoscopic surgeries.

The system combines powered, intelligent clamping with improved staple line perfusion and reduced tissue stress during compression, giving surgeons a new level of control. It has received regulatory market authorization in major regions, including the United States, Western Europe, and Japan.

With more than 6,000 staplers used in U.S. operating rooms daily, the Signia Circular Stapler targets a critical part of surgery: colorectal resection, a standard treatment for colon cancer and the primary treatment for rectal cancer. Anastomotic leaks—a risk when the colon is not properly sealed—can occur in up to 19% of procedures, potentially causing severe infections.

The Signia Circular Stapler is the only circular stapler on the market with integrated leak testing and features designed to minimize risk, including: up to 53% less distal tip motion during clamping and firing; 88% reduction in waste per procedure through its universal, reusable handle.

"The Signia Circular stapler brings a new level of precision and confidence to the OR," said Krista Sugerman, vice president & general manager, Core Surgical Innovations, Medtronic Medical Surgical Portfolio. "This technology helps standardize performance, improve efficiency, reduce variation, and ultimately supports better patient outcomes. It’s also a vital step toward building a complete and connected OR, where intelligent instruments work together across digital and robotics platforms to support improved patient outcomes.”

The stapler integrates Medtronic Tri-Staple and Adaptive Compression technologies, allowing real-time monitoring and adjustment of tissue compression. This helps prevent over-compression and potential tissue damage, reducing hematoma formation by up to 80% and improving perfusion along the staple line by as much as 164%.

"We are excited to bring the Tri-Staple technology that many surgeons have come to rely on in our Signia linear staplers to procedures that require circular staplers, such as colorectal resection," said Dr Matthew Kroh, chief medical officer, Core Surgical Innovations, Medtronic. "With superior performance, intelligent feedback, and a unique set of features that enable greater perfusion and more protection against leaks, surgeons can now rely on the Signia circular stapler to deliver a confident staple line.”
