OPPI partners with NIPER Raebareli to fund translational pharma research, build innovation talent

Scholarships, research grants and industry mentorship framework aim to strengthen India’s pharma R&D ecosystem

The Organisation of Pharmaceutical Producers of India (OPPI) has entered into a strategic collaboration with the National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research, Raebareli (NIPER-R) to support outcome-oriented pharmaceutical research.

This move aims to strengthen India’s emergence as a global innovation hub for drug discovery and translational science. The partnership builds on OPPI’s long-standing emphasis on innovation and academia linkages.

As part of the initiative, OPPI will institute gold and silver scholarships for two meritorious third- and fourth-year research scholars at NIPER-R. The scholarships will be deployed as research grants to back projects with strong translational potential and real-world healthcare relevance, reinforcing the growing push toward commercially and clinically meaningful pharmaceutical science.

The scholars will be selected by an expert panel that will assess the scientific merit, relevance and translational impact of ongoing projects. The structure is designed to reward not just academic excellence, but research that can advance patient care, accelerate innovation pipelines, and improve healthcare outcomes.

The collaboration also introduces a ‘Professor of Practice’ framework, under which experienced professionals from OPPI member companies will directly engage with students and researchers through workshops, curated lectures, and mentorship sessions. The objective is to narrow the academia-industry divide by exposing young researchers to regulatory realities, product development pathways, and market expectations.

Anil Matai, Director General, OPPI, stated, "India stands at a pivotal moment in its journey to become a global hub for pharmaceutical innovation. To realize this ambition, we must invest not just in infrastructure, but in ideas—and the young minds that power them. Our collaboration with NIPER Rae Bareli is rooted in the belief that research must go beyond academic pursuit to deliver tangible health outcomes. Through these scholarships, we aim to empower promising researchers to push the boundaries of science, accelerate innovation, and develop solutions that can transform patient lives not just in India but globally. This initiative is also aligned with the Government’s continued focus on strengthening pharmaceutical education and research, including the recent push to establish three new NIPERs and upgrade seven existing institutions, as highlighted by the Department of Pharmaceuticals."

Shubhini Saraf, Director NIPER-R, said, “At NIPER Raebareli, we are committed to nurturing scientific talent that can drive meaningful innovation in healthcare. This collaboration with OPPI marks an important step in strengthening the bridge between academia and industry."
