Mankind Pharma launches nationwide preventive oncology initiative to reach one million women

Partnership with MAMTA HIMC aims to boost awareness, screening, HPV vaccination, and early detection of breast and cervical cancer in underserved communities

Mankind Pharma has launched a nationwide preventive oncology initiative in partnership with Mamta Health Institute for Mother & Child (MAMTA HIMC), aiming to reach more than one million women and families across underserved communities with awareness and access to early detection services for breast and cervical cancer.

Launched during Cancer Survivors Month, the programme seeks to tackle one of India's most significant public health challenges—the low uptake of cancer screening among women.

According to national data, fewer than 2% of Indian women have ever undergone screening for cervical or breast cancer, despite these being among the most prevalent cancers affecting women in the country. Consequently, many cases are diagnosed at advanced stages, limiting treatment options and reducing survival rates.

Under the initiative, large-scale community outreach programmes will focus on educating women about early warning signs, breast self-awareness, cervical cancer screening, and the importance of HPV vaccination in cancer prevention. The programme will also train frontline healthcare workers, including ASHAs, ANMs, Community Health Officers (CHOs), and primary healthcare teams, equipping them to promote screening, provide education, and facilitate timely referrals for diagnosis and treatment.

Atish Majumdar, Senior President, Mankind Pharma, said that while many cancer cases can be managed more effectively when detected early, awareness and access continue to remain major barriers, particularly in underserved communities. He noted that the initiative aims to empower both communities and frontline healthcare workers with the knowledge needed to identify risks early and adopt preventive healthcare practices.

Medical experts welcomed the initiative, highlighting the critical role of awareness and early intervention. Dr. Aditya Sarin, Vice Chairman, Department of Medical Oncology at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, said that despite advances in cancer treatment, many women continue to be diagnosed at advanced stages, making awareness, screening, and vaccination essential tools in reducing the disease burden.

Dr. Manish Singhal, Vice Chairman, Medical Oncology at Yashoda Medicity, emphasized that frontline healthcare workers often serve as the first point of contact for millions of women and can play a vital role in improving early detection and timely intervention.
