ANRF CEO calls for excellence-led innovation at SRMIST Research Day

Dr Shivkumar Kalyanaraman emphasizes need for quality research, partnerships, and measurable outcomes

The Directorate of Research at SRM Institute of Science and Technology (SRMIST) hosted Research Day 2026 on April 17, 2026, bringing together prominent voices from academia, government, and industry to celebrate advancements in research, innovation, and collaboration.
 
The event was graced by Dr Shivkumar Kalyanaraman, Chief Executive Officer of the Anusandhan National Research Foundation (ANRF), Government of India, as the Chief Guest, and was presided over by Dr. P. Sathyanarayanan, Pro-Chancellor (Academics), SRMIST.
 
Addressing the gathering, Dr. Shivkumar Kalyanaraman outlined India’s ambition to emerge as a global leader in research and innovation. He stressed the importance of excellence, collaboration, and measurable impact in achieving this vision, while also pointing to opportunities under ANRF through large-scale funding and industry-linked initiatives that can drive meaningful societal and economic outcomes.
 
Dr. P. Sathyanarayanan said, “Securing multiple PM Early Career Research Grants reflects our commitment to excellence at SRMIST. It underscores the scientific strength of our faculty and reinforces our focus on addressing some of the most pressing healthcare challenges of today and the future. From AI-led drug discovery to precision medicine and early diagnostics, this work has the potential to transform how diseases are understood, prevented, and treated globally.”
 
He further added that SRMIST is preparing to launch a state-of-the-art Research Park, envisioned as a hub for innovation, industry collaboration, and translational research, aimed at bridging the gap between laboratory discoveries and real-world healthcare solutions.
 
Among the distinguished attendees were Prof. C. Muthamizhchelvan, Vice-Chancellor; Dr. S. Ponnusamy, Registrar; Dr. Nitin M. Nagarkar, Pro Vice-Chancellor (MHS); Prof. A. Vinay Kumar, Pro Vice-Chancellor (FSH & Management); Professor Y. S. R. Murthy, Pro Vice Chancellor (Law); Dr. Leenus Jesu Martin, Dean (Engineering & Technology); Dr. Bernaurdshaw Neppolian, Dean (Research); and Dr. B. Venkatachalapathy, Research Professor, along with senior leadership, faculty members, researchers, and students.
 
Reflecting on the institution’s research progress, Prof. C. Muthamizhchelvan noted that SRMIST produced 8,673 publications in 2025, with 27% involving international collaborations, 38% national partnerships, and 47% representing interdisciplinary work. In the same year, 124 research projects worth approximately Rs 50 crore were awarded by various funding agencies. Notably, 70% of these publications appeared in Q1 and Q2 journals, reinforcing the university’s focus on quality research.
 
Dr. B. Venkatachalapathy emphasized that modern research must extend beyond academic output to deliver tangible impact. He noted that SRMIST’s strong ecosystem positions it to contribute significantly to national growth through collaborative and impactful research.
