Teva expands European biosimilars push with AHZANTIVE launch for eye disease treatment

Teva said the launch strengthens its biosimilars strategy and expands access to biologic medicines across Europe

Teva Pharmaceutical is accelerating its push into biosimilars in Europe with the launch of AHZANTIVE (aflibercept), a biosimilar to Eylea, marking a major expansion of its ophthalmology portfolio.

The treatment, approved by the European Commission in 2025, is designed for serious retinal diseases including wet age-related macular degeneration (AMD), diabetic macular edema (DME), retinal vein occlusion (RVO)-related vision loss, and myopic choroidal neovascularisation (mCNV).

These conditions can progressively damage sight and place heavy strain on patients and healthcare systems.

Teva said the launch strengthens its biosimilars strategy and expands access to biologic medicines across Europe, backed by commercial partnerships and a broader manufacturing and supply network.

“Biosimilars play a critical role in sustainable healthcare systems,” said Yolanda Tibbe, Global Head of Biosimilars at Teva. “With this launch, we are expanding our biosimilars portfolio with an important treatment option for people living with serious conditions that can threaten sight.”

The rollout of AHZANTIVE pre-filled syringes began in May 2026 in key European markets including France, Germany, Spain, and the Netherlands, with additional launches expected later this year. The product is being commercialized under a semi-exclusive agreement with Klinge Biopharma GmbH and Formycon AG across major parts of Europe and Israel.

AHZANTIVE is described as highly similar to Eylea in efficacy, safety, and immunogenicity, positioning it as a lower-cost alternative in a high-burden therapeutic area dominated by chronic eye disorders.

Teva, which already markets 11 biosimilars globally and has 13 more in development, is leaning heavily on the segment as part of its broader “Pivot to Growth” strategy, aiming to deepen its presence in oncology, immunology, ophthalmology, and respiratory care.

The company says further European market expansions are planned through 2026 as it continues building out its biosimilars footprint and competing more aggressively in biologic medicines.
