Encouraging early detection and breaking the silence around men’s health
As the world observes prostate cancer awareness month this September, HCG Manavata Cancer Centre (HCGMCC) reaffirms its commitment to combating one of the most prevalent cancers among men in India. Prostate cancer ranks as the second leading cancer affecting Indian males, yet it is highly treatable when detected early.
The centre urges men above the age of 50—or earlier in cases with a family history of the disease—to prioritize regular screenings and remain alert to potential warning signs. Prostate cancer originates in the prostate gland cells, where uncontrolled cell division leads to tumour formation. While some forms grow slowly, others are aggressive and spread rapidly. Symptoms may include difficulty urinating, frequent urges to urinate, blood in urine or semen, reduced urine stream, erectile dysfunction, pelvic discomfort, and unexplained weight loss.
“Prostate cancer often progresses silently until it reaches an advanced stage. Through this campaign, we urge men—particularly those above 50 or with a family history—to get screened and remain aware of early warning signs. Early detection through PSA testing and regular check-ups can mean the difference between a life saved and a life lost. It is time for men to break the silence around their health and take proactive steps towards screening,” said Prof. Dr. Raj Nagarkar, Chief of Surgical Oncology & Robotic Services and Managing Director of KIMS Manavata Hospitals, HCG Manavata Cancer Centre, and Six Sigma, Nashik.
Prostate cancer may present in different forms, including adenocarcinoma (the most common), transitional cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and small cell prostate cancer. Diagnosis typically involves PSA blood tests, digital rectal exams, ultrasound, MRI, and biopsy. Treatment options range from monitoring and surgery (prostatectomy) to radiation therapy (external and brachytherapy), high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU), cryoablation, hormone therapy, chemotherapy, and immunotherapy.
“HCG Manavata Cancer Centre is equipped with state-of-the-art technology and a team of leading oncologists to deliver comprehensive prostate cancer care—from early diagnosis to advanced treatment. We have successfully performed over 100 robotic prostate cancer surgeries and continue to focus on personalized treatment plans tailored to each patient’s needs. Whether it is robotic-assisted surgery for precision, hormone therapy to slow progression, or immunotherapy to boost the body’s own defenses, our approach combines advanced medical expertise with compassionate care. Our mission is not only to treat prostate cancer but also to empower men with knowledge and proactive choices for better health,” Dr. Nagarkar added.
