The Ministry of Women and Child Development has launched the 8th edition of Poshan Pakhwada 2026, a nationwide campaign aimed at strengthening nutrition awareness and early childhood development, with this year’s theme centred on “Maximizing Brain Development in the First Six Years of Life.”

The campaign, inaugurated at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi, will run from April 9 to April 23 under Mission Poshan 2.0.

Union Minister Annpurna Devi underlined the importance of the first 1,000 days in a child’s life, noting that more than 85% of brain development takes place by the age of six. She said the initiative reflects the government’s sustained push to improve nutrition outcomes and holistic child development through a Jan Andolan approach involving Anganwadi workers, ASHAs, communities and families nationwide.

Since the launch of Poshan Abhiyaan in 2018, the programme has driven over 150 crore sensitisation activities and more than 9.8 crore community-based events, building strong grassroots participation. This year’s Pakhwada expands the agenda beyond nutrition to include responsive caregiving, early stimulation, school readiness through play-based education, reduced screen time, and stronger community participation in upgrading Anganwadi centres.

Key activities planned during the fortnight include home visits, Poshan Melas, counselling on maternal and child nutrition, demonstrations of early learning methods, and awareness sessions for parents on active engagement and healthy developmental practices. More than 4.2 lakh stakeholders joined the inaugural webcast, reflecting the scale of the campaign’s outreach.

The initiative reinforces India’s growing policy emphasis on the intersection of nutrition, early childhood care and cognitive development, positioning Anganwadi centres as critical community hubs for shaping healthier future generations.
