Chennai's VS Hospitals introduce cutting-edge brain therapy with TMS

TMS offers new hope to patients suffering from stroke, migraine, neuropathic pain, depression, and other disorders

Chennai has witnessed a medical first: VS Hospitals has launched Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) therapy, a non-invasive treatment for a range of neurological conditions.

Using gentle magnetic pulses to stimulate targeted brain regions, TMS offers new hope to patients suffering from stroke, migraine, neuropathic pain, depression, and other disorders. With minimal side effects and global clinical recognition, the therapy is being hailed as a major step forward in the city’s brain-health care.

The therapy was inaugurated in the presence of Muthu Subramanian, Executive Director, Prassanna, Group COO, Dr L Sindhuja, Senior Consultant Neurologist, and Dr S Sundar, Senior Orthopedic Surgeon and Medical Director of VS Hospitals.

TMS is particularly valuable for patients who have not responded to conventional treatments. The device delivers magnetic pulses through a coil over specific brain areas, personalized for each patient’s condition.

“TMS is a safe, non-invasive procedure that can significantly aid patients struggling with chronic neurological disorders like strokes, which are slow to improve, refractory headaches, neuropathic pain and functional neurological disorders,” said Dr Sindhuja.

She added, “By precisely targeting affected brain regions, we can stimulate neural pathways that have been slow to recover, offering hope where conventional therapies may not suffice. During a TMS session, patients either sit or lie comfortably while the clinician positions the magnetic coil over the targeted area in the scalp.

"Patients may experience a gentle tapping sensation or brief muscle twitching. Each session lasts around 20-30 minutes, and patients can return to their normal activities immediately after. This is an outpatient treatment without any injections or anaesthesia, or radiation.”

TMS has shown promising results in treating post-stroke weakness and speech disturbance, chronic headaches, neuropathic pain, Parkinson’s disease, dementia, and psychiatric conditions such as major depressive disorder, OCD, and anxiety.

VS Hospitals also offers Magnetic Peripheral Nerve Stimulation, a non-invasive therapy using a handheld coil over the affected area. This treatment helps manage sciatica, nerve injuries causing muscle weakness, chronic musculoskeletal pain, foot drop, and carpal tunnel syndrome.
