Approved as a web-based pre-diagnostic tool for suspected rare diseases and classified as a Class A (non-sterile and non-measuring) medical device
Sanofi has launched AccelRare, an artificial intelligence-powered digital pre-diagnosis tool in India, aimed at helping healthcare professionals identify rare diseases earlier.
The launch marks a major milestone in Sanofi's ambition to become the first pharmaceutical company powered by artificial intelligence at scale.
India is estimated to have between 72 million and 96 million people living with a rare disease, representing nearly 7% of the population. However, awareness and diagnostic capabilities remain limited.
AccelRare enables healthcare professionals to enter a patient's symptoms, medical history, and test results into a secure, web-based platform and receive a differential diagnosis within five to ten minutes. The tool covers 310 rare diseases and delivers a diagnostic reliability rate exceeding 88%.
In addition to generating potential diagnoses, the platform provides detailed disease descriptions, recommends additional diagnostic investigations, and connects patients with government-recognized Centres of Excellence (COEs) for rare diseases across India to facilitate timely specialist referrals.
The platform was co-developed and validated by 67 rare disease experts across 13 rare disease networks. It is built on MedVir, a technology platform certified as a Class I medical device in Europe.
In India, AccelRare has been approved as a web-based pre-diagnostic tool for suspected rare diseases and classified as a Class A (non-sterile and non-measuring) medical device.
Importantly, the platform is available free of charge, requires no registration, and does not collect patient-identifiable information, ensuring both accessibility and privacy.
Dr. Mayur Shah, Head of Rare Diseases Business at Sanofi India, said, “Behind the word ‘rare’ lies a staggering reality. An estimated 72–96 million people in India are living with a rare disease, and by the time many receive an accurate diagnosis, irreversible damage may already have occurred. AccelRare is our call to transform compassion into concrete action, democratizing rare disease expertise and putting the diagnostic intelligence of world-class specialists into the hands of every doctor in every corner of India.”
Dr. Milan Choksey, Medical Lead, Rare Diseases Business, Sanofi India, described AccelRare as a transformative clinical support tool capable of delivering structured, evidence-based differential diagnoses in less than ten minutes.
“Rare diseases often hide in plain sight because their symptoms mimic common conditions seen every day in clinical practice. AccelRare® helps physicians identify these conditions earlier and make informed decisions at the point of care, potentially preventing years of uncertainty for patients and their families,” he said.
