Chennai facility adds Hologic Selenia 3D AI Genius Mammography and comprehensive breast ultrasound services to strengthen breast cancer detection
Apollo Spectra Hospital, Alwarpet, has expanded its women's healthcare services with the introduction of the Hologic Selenia 3D AI Genius Mammography System and comprehensive breast ultrasound services, aiming to improve early detection, accurate diagnosis and personalised care for women at risk of breast cancer.
The latest addition to the hospital's breast care programme integrates advanced three-dimensional breast imaging with dedicated ultrasound services to support earlier diagnosis and better clinical outcomes.
The expansion comes amid a rising burden of breast cancer in India, where the disease remains the most common cancer among women. Tamil Nadu is among the three states with the highest breast cancer burden, reporting more than 700 disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) per 100,000 women.
Within the state, Chennai, Coimbatore and Madurai record some of the highest incidence rates, underscoring the need for greater awareness, routine screening and timely diagnosis.
To address this challenge, Apollo Spectra Hospital has deployed the Hologic Selenia 3D AI Genius Mammography System, an advanced imaging platform that captures multiple low-dose images from different angles to generate a detailed three-dimensional view of the breast.
The technology is designed to improve the detection of suspicious abnormalities, particularly in women with dense breast tissue, while reducing the impact of overlapping tissue that can obscure findings in conventional mammography.
According to the hospital, the system can detect up to 41% more invasive breast cancers than conventional two-dimensional mammography and reduce false-positive recalls by 15–40%, helping minimise unnecessary follow-up investigations.
It also offers a scan time of just 3.7 seconds, improving patient comfort while maintaining radiation exposure comparable to that of a standard mammogram.
Dr. Selvi Radhakrishna, Senior Consultant Oncoplastic Breast Surgeon at Apollo Spectra Hospital, Chennai, Alwarpet, said, “Advanced imaging technologies enable us to detect abnormalities with greater confidence while making the screening process faster and more comfortable. When breast cancer is detected before it spreads to the lymph nodes, the five-year survival rate can be as high as 96%, highlighting the value of regular screening.”
