Godavari Biorefineries has achieved a major milestone in its cancer research programme.
The company has secured a patent from the Japan Patent Office for its breakthrough invention, “5-Hydroxy-1,4-Naphthalenedione for Use in the Treatment of Cancer.”
The newly granted patent covers a novel class of compounds that have shown powerful inhibitory activity against both conventional cancer cells and highly resilient cancer stem cells. The compounds have demonstrated significant potential in targeting multiple aggressive cancers, including breast and prostate malignancies.
The recognition in Japan further strengthens Godavari Biorefineries’ expanding global intellectual property portfolio, with patent protection already secured across China, Spain, the United Kingdom, and several European Union member states.
As the world’s third-largest pharmaceutical market, Japan is recognised for its stringent intellectual property standards and rigorous patent evaluation process.
“We have always believed that our role is to use science to create a better world. Whether it is improving the health of our soil, supporting agriculture, advancing sustainable materials or discovering molecules that could shape the future of human health, the purpose remains the same.
"Every patent we secure reflects the quality of our scientific research and strengthens our ability to build original molecules that can make a meaningful difference to society,” said Samir Somaiya, Chairman and Managing Director, Godavari Biorefineries Limited.
The company is advancing the development of next-generation cancer therapies while continuing to expand its international patent footprint.
With a lead molecule progressing through clinical trials and intellectual property protection established across key global markets, Godavari Biorefineries is strengthening its focus on translational research aimed at addressing critical challenges in human health.
