Global pharma powerhouse Merck is marking a major milestone as its global employee volunteer initiative, SPARK, celebrates a decade of connecting science with communities worldwide—while unveiling ambitious plans to dramatically expand its reach.

Launched 10 years ago, the program has mobilized employees across the globe to bring hands-on science learning into classrooms and communities, blending education with local service. What began as a volunteer effort has grown into a far-reaching initiative shaping how students experience science.

“SPARK reflects who we are - scientists, engineers and problem-solvers who believe science should be accessible to everyone,” said Karen Madden, Chief Technology Officer of the Life Science business of Merck. “Over the past decade, our employees have helped students experience science in ways that make it real. As we enter our next chapter, we’re committed to broadening access and inspiring the next generation of innovators.”

The scale of the program underscores that impact. Since 2016, employees from 48 countries have contributed nearly 200,000 volunteer hours, directly engaging more than 600,000 students. Through partnerships with nonprofits, SPARK has extended its influence to an additional 9.47 million students worldwide.

At its core is a focus on science education. Initiatives like Curiosity Labs and the Curiosity Cube —a mobile science lab traveling across three continents—deliver immersive, interactive experiences designed to spark curiosity and deepen understanding. Beyond the classroom, employees also support local communities through site tours, civic events, and the company’s annual Global Food Drive.

The company backs its commitment with policy: employees receive up to 16 hours of paid volunteer time each year, allowing them to contribute to causes that matter locally. While SPARK operates globally, activities are driven by employee-led teams on the ground, tailoring efforts to community needs.

Now entering its second decade, Merck is aiming significantly higher. The company plans to directly reach 2 million students, impact 75 million through nonprofit partnerships, log 650,000 volunteer hours across 66 countries, and expand the Curiosity Cube to three additional continents—signalling that the next phase of SPARK could be its most expansive yet.
