Johnson & Johnson brings India’s first PFA technology for atrial fibrillation treatment

New platform integrates advanced cardiac mapping and ablation workflow, offering a novel treatment option for AFib patients at risk of stroke and heart failure

Johnson & Johnson MedTech has announced the approval of the VARIPULSE Platform, making it the first Pulsed Field Ablation (PFA) technology available in India for the treatment of atrial fibrillation (AFib), one of the most common cardiac rhythm disorders globally.

The technology has already been used in more than 80,000 catheter ablation procedures worldwide and marks a significant advancement in the management of AFib, a condition characterized by an irregular and often rapid heartbeat caused by abnormal electrical signals in the heart’s upper chambers.

AFib affects an estimated 50 million people globally and is associated with an increased risk of stroke, heart failure, and premature death. In India, the prevalence of AFib is estimated to range between 0.1% and 1.6% of the population, translating to nearly five million people living with the condition.

According to Johnson & Johnson MedTech, the VARIPULSE Platform is designed to provide a safe, efficient, and consistent treatment option for AFib patients while streamlining the workflow for physicians.

A key differentiator of the platform is its integration with the CARTO 3 System, a three-dimensional electroanatomical cardiac mapping technology that enables real-time visualization of cardiac structures and electrical activity. The combined solution allows physicians to perform mapping and ablation within a single workflow, supporting greater procedural precision, efficiency, and reproducibility.

The platform is also designed to support patient-centric care by minimizing or eliminating fluoroscopy exposure during procedures and can be used with either deep sedation or conscious sedation, offering flexibility in clinical practice.
