Evonik sells Hanau pharma assets to ProChem in strategic portfolio shift

The sale is part of a broader strategy to streamline its asset footprint and concentrate investment on core growth areas

Evonik is divesting selected pharmaceutical ingredient production assets at its Hanau site in Germany to ProChem Group, in a move aimed at sharpening its focus on high-growth healthcare technologies.

The transaction transfers GMP-compliant production facilities for pharmaceutical ingredients to ProChem, strengthening the contract manufacturer’s industrial base and expanding its pharma service capabilities.

For Evonik’s Health Care division, the sale is part of a broader strategy to streamline its asset footprint and concentrate investment on core growth areas, including advanced drug delivery systems and precision biosolutions such as lipids for mRNA, gene delivery, and cell-culture ingredients.

“Refining our focus and aligning our assets enables us to deliver even more strongly in the areas where we create the highest value for our customers,” said Guido Skudlarek, head of the Health Care business line.

The Hanau site has long been a key part of Evonik’s pharmaceutical manufacturing network, producing APIs, intermediates, and advanced lipids used in modern drug delivery technologies. The facility will continue operating for clinical and small-scale commercial production of pharmaceutical lipids, which remain central to Evonik’s strategy in high-growth biotech markets.

As part of the restructuring, Evonik had already phased out keto acid production in Hanau at the end of 2025, consolidating its keto and amino acid portfolio under the REXIM brand across its Wuming (China) and Ham (France) sites.

“With this step we are strengthening our position in these highly attractive markets to offer our customers supply security with a broad portfolio across markets,” said Thomas Hermann, head of the REXIM product line.

ProChem said the acquisition brings significant industrial opportunity, adding advanced GMP infrastructure and expanding its service offering for pharmaceutical customers.

“We are gaining state-of-the-art facilities, quality-assured processes, and an excellent industrial infrastructure at the Hanau site,” said Jörg Blumhoff, Chief Sales Officer at the ProChem Group. “This enables us to significantly expand our service portfolio and offer our customers even more comprehensive, scalable, and regulatory-compliant solutions in the future.”

The deal positions ProChem to scale across synthesis, formulation, and advanced chemical processing services, spanning pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, food additives, and specialty chemicals, while reinforcing Evonik’s pivot toward higher-value biotech and drug delivery platforms.
