Highlights India’s advances in pharmacopoeial science, regulatory standards, and global harmonization efforts at the 16th International Meeting of World Pharmacopoeias
A delegation from the Indian Pharmacopoeia Commission (IPC), Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India, participated in the 16th International Meeting of World Pharmacopoeias (IMWP) and the accompanying Stakeholders’ Meeting held in Brasília, Brazil, from June 15 to 17, 2026.
The delegation was led by Dr. V. Kalaiselvan, Secretary-cum-Scientific Director, and included Dr. Pawan Saini and Dr. Shruti Rastogi.
Coordinated by the World Health Organization (WHO), the meeting brought together representatives from major pharmacopoeias and regulatory institutions worldwide to discuss advancements in pharmaceutical standards, harmonization efforts, and emerging challenges in ensuring the quality, safety, and efficacy of medicines.
Participants included representatives from the Brazilian Pharmacopoeia, European Pharmacopoeia, Indian Pharmacopoeia, Japanese Pharmacopoeia, Korean Pharmacopoeia, Mexican Pharmacopoeia, Russian Pharmacopoeia, British Pharmacopoeia, United States Pharmacopeia, State Pharmacopoeia of the Republic of Uzbekistan, Vietnamese Pharmacopoeia, and The International Pharmacopoeia of WHO.
During the meeting, Dr. Kalaiselvan presented recent developments in the Indian Pharmacopoeia, highlighting advancements in pharmacopoeial standards, modernization initiatives, and India’s growing contribution to the global harmonization of medicine quality standards.
Discussions underscored that the standards of the Indian Pharmacopoeia are comparable with those of leading international pharmacopoeias, reinforcing India’s position as a key contributor to global pharmaceutical quality systems.
India also received recognition for its leadership in developing and establishing quality standards for critical therapeutic categories, including anti-tuberculosis medicines, anti-cancer therapeutics, blood and blood products, medicines used in the management of anaemia, and other complex pharmaceutical molecules.
The acknowledgment reflects the country's expanding scientific expertise, regulatory capabilities, and commitment to strengthening global public health through robust quality standards.
The Indian delegation actively participated in discussions on modern microbiological methods, pharmacopoeial convergence, and environmental sustainability in pharmaceutical standards. These deliberations focused on fostering greater alignment among international pharmacopoeias while addressing evolving scientific and regulatory challenges facing the pharmaceutical sector.
