Roche has unveiled Axelios 1, a next-generation sequencing (NGS) platform for research use that is powered by its proprietary Sequencing by Expansion (SBX) technology.

The new system is designed to accelerate genomics research by delivering whole-genome sequencing results within hours while offering high accuracy, scalability, and cost efficiency.

Developed for research laboratories of all sizes, Axelios 1 enables scientists to adapt workflows and support a wide range of genomics applications. The platform is capable of handling both small and large sequencing projects without requiring changes to the system.

The launch is backed by collaborations with leading research institutions, including the Hartwig Medical Foundationand Broad Clinical Labs, as well as partnerships with 10x Genomics for library preparation. The platform also supports SBX analysis through Google DeepVariant and Roche's open-source XOOS software suite.

"Axelios 1 delivers a disruptive sequencing solution that combines high accuracy with unprecedented speed, scalability, and cost efficiency, enabling researchers to explore applications that were previously not feasible," said Matt Sause, CEO, Roche Diagnostics. He added that the platform also has the potential to support future clinical applications and advance personalized healthcare.

The system leverages SBX chemistry to convert DNA or RNA into expandable surrogate polymers known as Xpandomers, which are analysed using reusable CMOS nanopore sensors. According to Roche, this innovative approach enables same-day whole-genome sequencing while maintaining flexibility and operational efficiency.

Roche clarified that Axelios 1 is currently available for research use only and is not intended for diagnostic applications. The launch further strengthens the company's genomics portfolio and underscores its continued investment in next-generation sequencing technologies.
