Thermo Fisher Scientific has launched a major expansion of its Massachusetts site with the opening of a new flagship US Bioprocess Design Center (BDC). The aim is to accelerate the development and scale-up of biologics, including vaccines and cell and gene therapies.

The 4,000-square-foot facility is designed as a hands-on hub where customers can work directly with scientists and engineers, combining training, demonstration labs, and end-to-end bioproduction capabilities—from media and cell line development to purification, filtration, and analytics.

The goal: shorten development timelines and reduce risk as therapies move toward manufacturing and commercialization.

Onsite bioprocess specialists will guide customers through real-time testing, process refinement, and technical validation, helping translate early-stage concepts into scalable production systems.

Daniella Cramp, senior vice president, said: “Our new Bioprocess Design Center brings together Thermo Fisher’s experts and customers to tackle some of the most complex challenges in bioprocessing, demonstrating how collaboration and shared innovation can accelerate therapeutic development and help deliver life-changing therapies to patients faster."

She added: “By creating a space where customers can work side by side with our scientists and engineers, we can help translate innovative ideas into scalable solutions that advance biologics development and manufacturing for customers across the United States.”

Massachusetts leaders framed the investment as a boost to the state’s already dominant life sciences ecosystem.

“Companies like Thermo Fisher Scientific are choosing Massachusetts because of our world-renowned life sciences sector, and we are proud to partner with them as they continue to grow and invest in our state,” said Governor Maura Healey.

“This new Bioprocess Design Center will accelerate cutting-edge research, strengthen our economy, and create new jobs for workers across our state. Massachusetts continues to lead the nation in life sciences because we invest in innovation, support our workforce, and partner with companies that are delivering the next generation of life-saving therapies.”

With its location inside Thermo Fisher’s 290,000-square-foot Plainville campus—already home to sterile fill-finish and viral vector services—the new center deepens the company’s push to position itself as a full-spectrum partner in biologics manufacturing.
